La fine dell’impero?
Pare che Dell venderà davvero desktop e portatile con Ubuntu preinstallati:
Ne parla per esempio The Register, che dice che verrà offerta come opzione preinstallata la distribuzione Ubuntu 7.04 a partire dalla fine di maggio. Saranno disponibili sia macchine desktop, sia laptop. La conferma diretta viene da ZDNet, che linka l’annuncio di Dell, ribadito qui. L’annuncio corrispondente di Ubuntu è qui. Dell dice che Ubuntu 7.04 sarà disponibile in opzione su alcuni modelli consumer e che l’offerta per ora è limitata agli Stati Uniti.

Mark Shuttleworth: Well, it’s changing, but it’s not completely changed. Ubuntu still does depend on continued funding from me. I think it’s a very efficient way for me to spend money and have a philanthropic impact. There are millions of people who now have access to technology thats reliable and thats free. And that’s an empowering thing which they can use to start businesses or learn about technology, become developers.

…per la Microsoft. Sembra che una chiave di attivazione per Windows Vista può essere generato con “brute force”. Dura ore, ma funzionerebbe.
It is a simple brute force attack, dumb as a rock that just tries keys. If it gets one, you manually have to check it and try activation. Is is ugly, takes hours, is far from point and click, but it is said to work.

Non è che Dell ha molta furia di vendere i suoi Pc e portatili con Linux preinstallato:
The company said Tuesday that the note was just about certifying the hardware for being ready to work with Novell SUSE Linux, not an announcement that the computers would be loaded and sold with the operating system in the near future.
In un primo passo cetificano solo l’hardware per compatibilità con Novell Suse, quindi niente urli di gioia. Se poi invece pagare il supporto tecnico a Microsoft lopaghi alla Novell cambia poco, come diceva bene Mark Shuttleworth.
As free software becomes more successful and more pervasive there will be an increasing desire on the part of companies to make it more proprietary. We’ve already seen that with Red Hat and Novell, which essentially offer free software on proprietary terms – their “really free” editions are not certified, carry no support and receive no systematic security patching. In other words – they’re beta or test versions. If you want the best that free software can deliver, a rock solid, widely certified, secure platform, from either of those companies then you have to pay, and you pay the same price whether you are Goldman Sachs or a startup in Rio de Janeiro.
That’s not the vision we all share of what free software can achieve.
With Ubuntu, our vision is to make the very best of free software freely available, globally. To the extent we make short-term compromises, for drivers or firmware along the way, we see those as bugs, and ones that will be closed over time.
Sono entrato nel mondo Linux grazie alla Suse di Novell, ma questo pesce puzza da un po’, e le ultime due versioni giravano anche peggio della Kubuntu.
