Vista vs. Linux

with 5 comments

So, bottom line time, it will cost you $724 per PC to upgrade to Vista. Or, you could pay $170 per PC to get SLED. That’s a savings of $554 per user desktop

A security update is now being finalized, but at this point, Microsoft plans to release it as part of its October security updates on October 10, three weeks away. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed late Wednesday when asked by internetnews.com that the fix would come next month, not sooner.[...]

And Dunham said this code is spreading among underground virus sites quickly. ‘The exploit code is out there for people to copy, paste and start using. It’s trivial to leverage and reproduce. When it’s popularized and easy to do, it’s trouble,’ he said.”
“The VML exploit is a buffer overflow that allows for remote code execution, and in this case, it’s being used to download multi-stage, multi-chain attacks using a program called WebAttacker toolkit.”>
“Dunham said in one case, WebAttacker installed 73 files, including 15 executables, taking up 12 megabytes in size. It installed everything from proxies to dialers to keyloggers to spyware.”
“Sites also thinks this virus could be as nasty as WMF, if not worse. ‘Just looking at an email means you can be exploited. So things can escalate very quickly,’ he said.””

Come creare i problemi

Certe idee non sono male:

There are a lot of tools out there to make the system administrator’s life easier. However, no tool is a replacement for properly understanding the system and experience in troubleshooting unknown situations. This is where trouble-maker comes in. Unlike other projects, we do not attempt to solve problems — we cause them

Vista s’č vista

without comments

Secondo Forbes Linux arriva sempre di piů sugli desktop:

Visit the home of a Silicon Valley software programmer and you’ll find two things: Macs and Linux boxes.

To these guys, Windows has become the operating system equivalent of the America Online Internet service–a mass-market product that only appeals to people who don’t know any better

…first release candidate for Windows Vista feels more like an alpha to me (or early beta, at best). I’m not talking about performance issues, which will most likely be improved upon before this OS goes gold. No, it’s all about a cohesive user experience / user interface for me. Vista fails on most UI fronts. It doesn’t look or behave similarly across any part of the operating system. Even more sad? That’s by design, folks.

I never thought I’d say this, but… we’ve finally seen the day when KDE / Gnome look, work, and feel “better” than Windows. Vista is schizophrenic, and that disorder has been…
